On Thursday (Sep 1), Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former Malaysian premier Najib Razak, will find out if she has been found guilty of seeking bribes from firms vying for government contracts.
In the wake of Najib’s ouster in a historic election in 2018, his wife, who was criticized for her lavish lifestyle, is at the center of a wide-ranging crackdown on corruption.
The Malaysian top court upheld Najib’s conviction last week in a case linked to 1MDB’s multi-billion-dollar graft scandal. Four other corruption cases remain on trial.
She is awaiting trial on three charges related to soliciting and receiving US$279 million in bribes from the government while her husband was in power in 2016 and 2017.
A company official allegedly offered Rosmah RM6.5 million in exchange for RM187.5 million (US$41.80 million).
Appeals to higher courts could result in a stay on Rosmah’s sentencing until the Kuala Lumpur High Court decides whether she should serve time in prison and pay a fine of at least five times what she has been fined.
As well as several government and company officials involved in the project, Rosmah claims she was framed.
